Graduate Student

Research Advisor: Prof. Ana Arias

BETR Research Thrust: Printed and Flexible Electronics

Bio

Payton Goodrich is a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering co-advised by Prof. Tarek Zohdi (ME) and Prof. Ana Arias (EECS).  Payton received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University in 2015 and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2018. His research interests are in printed electronics, wearable devices, and environmental sensors.

Research

Payton’s research focuses on the print-based fabrication of naturally-degradable nitrate sensors for precision agriculture.  These low-cost sensors are fabricated with biodegradable materials and scalable processes for the measurement of nitrate concentration in soil.  These sensors are being laboratory and field tested for applications such as improving fertigation efficiency, reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and minimizing nitrate leakage to the environment.
