BETR Research Thrust: System Integration

Bio

Ruocheng Wang received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microelectronics from Peking University in 2017. He is currently pursuing a PhD degree at UC Berkeley under the advisory of Professor Vladimir Stojanovic. His research interests include the design of analog/mixed-signal integrated circuits and electronic-photonic systems.

Research

With the feature of beamforming, massive MIMO systems benefit from higher spectral efficiency and spatial capacity. Meanwhile, the increasing raw data rate results in a higher power budget for the serial data link, which restricts the size of the array. Beamforming inside a smaller subarray partially resolves this issue but gets other restrictions because of the beamformer whose size and power scales with the number of users. We proposed an integrated electronic-photonic system which aggregates the original analog data at the antenna site and transmits the data to the remote processing site. The system features low power and high element density at the antenna site, and performs the signal downconversion by the integrated photonic devices.
