Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Advisor: Prof. Jeffrey Bokor

BETR Research Thrust: Embedded Memory

Bio

Akshay Pattabi (he/him) is a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Jeffrey Bokor in the EECS department at UC Berkeley. Akshay obtained his Ph.D. in EECS from UC Berkeley in 2020, and his Ph.D. research was on ultrafast magnetic phenomena and their application in devices. Prior to that, he obtained his B. Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), India, in 2014. Outside of research, Akshay’s interests lie in making STEM accessible to a broader cross-section of the public, especially underprivileged and underrepresented minorities.

Research

Akshay Pattabi is currently doing experimental and theoretical research to understand the physics behind of various ultrafast processes (phenomena in the picosecond and sub-picosecond timescales). He is also interested in the potential applications of these processes for high-speed electronic devices. Some of his research projects include ultrafast spin orbit torque switching, helicity-independent all-optical switching of ferrimagnetic GdTbCo alloys, and modelling of helicity-independent all-optical switching in ferrimagnets. He is also carrying out research on the time-dynamics of the insulator-to-metal transition in lanthanum cobaltate films by femtosecond laser and picosecond current pulses.
